Introduction to Macronutrients

Protein, carbohydrates and fat are known as macronutrients because your body needs a considerable amount of them as compared to micronutrients, which are commonly known as vitamins and minerals. Protein is the building block of your body's tissues including muscle. Unlike carbohydrates and fats, proteins are made of nitrogen-containing groups called amino acids. Carbohydrates provide energy and so does dietary fat.

The Power of Protein

During exercise, muscle tissue is broken down. It is rebuilt afterward with rest and nutritional support from foods like protein. The general recommendation for active adults is about half a gram of protein per pound of body weight per day.

G of Protein X lbs =
G of Protein per Day

For perspective, a 4-ounce chicken breast contains around 32 grams of protein and one extra large egg has around 7 grams.

When to Take Protein

Consuming protein before endurance training, like running or cycling, can help spare muscle tissue from excessive breakdown. Muscle is actually broken down during exercise and can be built back stronger during the recovery phase.

Muscle tissue is broken down during exercise and is built back with rest and, in part, with assistance from the amino acids found in protein. Consuming protein within an hour of exercise can help spark the recovery process.
